When is a Structural Engineer Needed for a Property Purchase?
Most property transactions are relatively straightforward. However, occasionally an initial survey suggests that there may be a more complex problem with the property. That's when a structural engineer may be required to complete a more specialist study and record and report on any highlighted defects.

Typically, when a property is sold or purchased, the buyer will engage the services of a surveyor. These surveys, such as an RICS Condition Report or a Home Buyer's Report, will give you varying degrees of insight into the condition of a property. These reports (especially on older properties) often identify areas of concern, and your surveyor may recommend a Structural Engineer's Report.
This Structural Engineer's Report will provide you with a detailed analysis of any defects highlighted, advise on potential repair alternatives, and guide you regarding associated costs.
